Designing the Relationships We Desire 🌶️ 🌶️
Sunday January 12, 2025 11:00am - 12:30pm EST
In our relationships, we often end up subscribing to existing socially acceptable containers of relationship without fully considering whether they really work for us. For example, in many cultures, the standard life partnership is to meet someone, fall in love, date, move in, get engaged and married, have kids, and live happily ever after. But this one size fits all approach may not actually work for many people's deeper needs and desires – and this provides an opportunity to design a relationship that does fit.

“Relationship by design” is a process for two people in any kind of long-term relationship to intentionally create a style of relationship uniquely designed to support their respective needs, desires, boundaries, and preferences. It consists of three stages: first, making the already-existing implicit nature of the relationship explicit; second, identifying and expressing desires, needs, and wishes for the relationship going forward; and third, constructing an agreement that includes overlapping desires while seeking to maximize the fulfillment of each person within the relationship.

In this 90 minute session, ART International Co-Founder and Senior Course Leader Ryel Kestano guides relationship partners through this powerful transformational process that culminates in deeper connection, greater empathy, more understanding of each other, and a relationship that can thrive and evolve over time.
*This workshop is for partners / pairs of two people who consider themselves in an “intimate” relationship—defined as a close relationship that includes emotional, mental, spiritual, and/or physical or sexual intimacy. Such relationships may include romantic partners, close friends, or family relationships alike. Please come to this workshop with your partner.

The Ground of Self: Contact Improvisation Series III/III 🌶️ 🌶️
Sunday January 12, 2025 11:00am - 12:30pm EST
Join us for three sessions where we'll explore, learn, and grow together in Contact Improvisation. Whether you're new to this dance form or looking to deepen your skills, these sessions will provide a supportive space for discovery and development.

We'll focus on enhancing our understanding of Contact Improvisation*, aiming to foster a greater sense of openness and ease in our movements, paying attention to the improvisational and relational skills involved in the practice, for authentic and in-depth exploratory processes.

We'll explore the biomechanics underlying Contact Improvisation dancing, through somatic explorations, enhancing our technical proficiency. Furthermore, we'll explore expanding our presence and refining our sensory listening and attention skills. This will establish a spacious canvas of shared awareness, serving as the foundation of our being together, that facilitates new ways of relating, expressing and collaborating safely in a non-verbal way. Before doing and wanting we want to emphasize our ability to be and to participate, connecting and nourishing a common ground, from which the emergence of our creative embodiments and synergy of voices can happen.

We foster a welcoming space, devoid of judgment and expectation, a secure container that embraces diverse expressions and embodiments, enabling agency and consensual interactions, towards presence, creative discovery, and dancing.

Day 1: We will explore the possibility of anchoring our movements in clear yet dynamic “roots”, which allows for the emergence of definition and stability while liberating a wide range of possibilities and effortless motion when improvising with a partner in contact.

Day 2: Our focus will be on aerial alignments that support our body's structure, facilitating weight sharing and enabling graceful suspensions and gentle flights.

Day 3: We will play developing creative dances emphasizing the dynamic interplay between kinaesthetic elements and individual creative expression. Intuitively meeting the others, synchronizing and creatively co-creating embodied dialogues.

To get the full benefit of Irene’s facilitation and support the possibility of an in-depth development of the process we suggest you attend all three sessions.

* In CONTACT IMPROVISATION we move with one or more partners, relating and understanding each other through sensory listening without adhering to fixed sequences and roles. We learn to physically relate and communicate through fine-tuning and touch, dynamically traveling together through space, and combining our bodies closely, exploring all levels from standing to the floor. This practice encompasses solo, partnering, and group dancing, fostering creative skills through embodied and sensorial connections.

🌶️ 🌶️  Medium: The workshop invites sensuality, moving touch, cuddles, or extended close physical contact with others, but does NOT invite sexuality or nudity.

“A partnering practice is centered around building a relationship with reality”
-Tom Weklser

We utilize a practice that draws from many others with the goal of finding common themes and principles across movement disciplines to explore connection, attunement, and discovery through a lens of serious play. Join us for an hour and a half full of partner games, exercises, and explorations that are certain to level up your ability to move within another in your favorite disciplines.

Your guides will be Dr. Harnoor Singh (@movementwithnoor), a doctor of physical therapy, and Logan DiTillo (@logamotion), a nomadic movement teacher and acrobat. Intimate Relationships from the Inside Out: Intimacy, Trauma, and Attachment through an IFS Lens 🌶️
Sunday January 12, 2025 11:00am - 12:30pm EST
Notes: Both couples and individuals are welcome! It is recommended, though not required, to attend the Authentic Self-Relating workshop on Friday to set the foundation for this one.

The extent to which our childhoods impact every facet of our adult romantic relationships is often shocking to discover. In this workshop, we’ll explore intimate relationships through the lens of Internal Family systems (IFS), which is a wonderful
approach to help us get in touch with our true selves, see the big picture, and get to know our minds in a deeper way. We’ll go beyond attachment styles and take a deep look at how the many parts of our minds play major roles in our behaviors, tendencies, and patterns within intimate relationships.

Understanding what drives these repetitive behaviors – in both ourselves and our partner(s) – enables compassion for both self and other, and also provides a roadmap to healing the underlying causes from the bottom-up. As we do this, we will notice significant changes in our relationship dynamics.

We’ll also do some experiential exercises – both at the group level, and in rotating pairs – to get a deeper feel for how this approach can help. We’ll encourage some brief shares by those who are willing to do so, followed by Q&A as time permits.

🌶️ Mild: The workshop does not invite sensuality or sexuality. There will be no facilitator invitations to cuddle or share moving touch, plus no welcoming or invoking of sexual energy. Any partner dancing that occurs will default to or center open position

Brazilian Zouk & Lambada Intensive (Add-On)
Sunday January 12, 2025 1:30pm - 3:00pm EST
APPLY HERERegistration for this add-on requires meeting prerequisites and completing an application process.
For the fourth consecutive year we will be offering our unique Brazilian Zouk program at Interfusion Festival. The first Intensives were an amazing experience and this time we want to make it even better by bringing in new instructors to contribute with their teachings. This year we will explore the dance’s origins in the Lambada through new and innovative adaptations that Brazilian Zouk dancers will find familiar.
This year’s intensive will be a deep dive into:
  • Incorporating Lambada concepts into one’s Zouk dancing;
  • Remixing the concepts through dancing Lambada to a variety of musical styles;
  • Adapting Lambada moves to expand our head movement and footwork vocabulary, and;
  • Identifying the connections between the two timings.

Intensive Qualifications
In light of the higher complexity of the topics, the Zouk Intensive was designed for more experienced dancers, who fulfill at least two of the requirements below:
  • Have at least 2 years of continuous*, or 4 years of combined Brazilian Zouk experience
  • Able to execute Brazilian Zouk fundamentals with ease and fluency
  • Able to execute Brazilian Zouk basic head movement with ease and fluency.
*By continuous we mean that the dancer did not take long breaks since they’ve started learning, that the dancer goes to classes, socials, training and other learning experiences consistently. Interruptions due to the past few years are understandable and can be mentioned in your application.
APPLY HERERegistration for this add-on requires meeting prerequisites and completing an application process. In order to participate, it is necessary to have a full pass for the Festival. After submitting your application and responding to the check-out questions in full, your request will be assessed by the Interfusion Zouk Team. If additional information is required, such as a video of your dance, it will be communicated to you by email. If you do not meet the qualifications for the intensive this year, you will receive a full refund of the intensive ticket.

Decolonizing Sex: Navigating Power Dynamics in the Bedroom and Beyond 🌶️ 🌶️
Sunday January 12, 2025 1:30pm - 3:00pm EST
Based on the core insights of liberation philosophy and sex-positivity, this workshop introduces a  basic framework for viewing sexual, intimate, and social interactions through a power-informed lens. It covers the ever-shifting and context-based nature of power, the way power can impact consent, and the responsibilities of being in both up-power and down-power roles.
Through scenario analysis, real-world examples, and dyad exercises, students learn the core skills for navigating power dynamics in sexual scenarios: noticing and naming where power lies, somatically sensing when power has been conferred on them or they’ve projected power onto others, and using pauses, invitations, and simple phrases to mitigate possible harm. Students walk away with a fresh new lens for understanding and engaging in intimacy!

The Soul Massage: Gong Resonance Meditation 🌶️
Sunday January 12, 2025 1:30pm - 3:00pm EST
Come join David for a very special immersive sound experience coined the Soul Massage. Participants will be bathed by the sound and vibrations of a massive 54 inch bronze Chau gong accompanied by a 40 inch Nepalese singing bowl gong, a 38 inch Paiste Sedna Planetary gong and a 24 inch Paiste Synodic Moon Planetary gong; very grounding and profound. There will be a short breath work practice before the sound bath to prepare ourselves for meditation. Then everyone will lay down and get as comfy and cozy as possible. Warmth is essential for optimal comfort so be sure to bring plenty of blankets and clothing to ensure this. The heart rate and body temperature drops during this meditation which naturally can cause the hands and feet to get cold easily. Once everyone is comfortable, the sound journey will begin and run for a duration of 60 minutes before coming back out renewed. Come vibrate with us!

🌶️ Mild: The workshop does not invite sensuality or sexuality. There will be no facilitator invitations to cuddle or share moving touch, plus no welcoming or invoking of sexual energy. Any partner dancing that occurs will default to or center open position.

Sunday January 12, 2025 3:30pm - 5:30pm EST
APPLY HERE FOR THIS ADD-ON INTENSIVE

Day 1 - Precision Icarian
The first day we will focus on cleaning up Icarian skills to make them precise and tempo-able. Expect to refine skills you have done before - working towards mastery of these skills. We will also incorporate some unique pops and drills you may not have worked on before! This lesson will build towards linking skills together for seamless icarian flows.

Prereqs: Straight throws in bird and throne

Day 2 - Whip Mastery
We will work towards building whip technique for more dynamic skills. We have specific techniques that we have learned from teachers all over the world as well as developed through our own training that we love to share. This lesson will give you a deeper understanding of these skills and all of the building blocks needed for progressing toward more dynamic whip pops. We will touch on nervous system regulation, dynamic spotting, and how to keep these skills safe.

Prereqs: Comfort in bird, throne, reverse bird, and reverse throne. Some experience attempting whips is helpful.

Day 3 - Jump Start your Whip Pops
Whether you’ve done a handful of whip pops, or you’re still working towards your first one, this class will have content for you. We will have a short recap of the first two lessons leading into dynamic entries in and out of whips. Multiple levels of content will be offered and students can work at their own pace. Our goal is to offer a clear and safe pathway - it is most important to us for our students to learn when they are ready for the next progression, and when they need to continue repping out certain drills.

Prereqs: Comfort with whips, and basic icarian transitions such as bird to throne. Doing the first two workshops covers these prereqs.

Kindly you may bring your instruments.

While the primary focus of the space is contact improvisation, solo and partnered improvisational movement of other forms is welcome when it fits in the ground rules.

Ground Rules:
  • Practice Nonverbal & Verbal Consent
  • Activate Deep Listening: Practice attunement to self, partner(s), and others in the space
  • Observation is Welcome
  • Solo Movement is Welcome
  • Keep conversations and other interpersonal interactions to the peripheries
  • Please be mindful of sound especially after 11:30pm as the sound here travels through the entire hotel.

“Contact Improvisation is a dance form based on the communication between two or more moving bodies that are in physical contact and their combined relationship to the physical laws that govern their motion—gravity, momentum, inertia.” - Nancy Stark Smith
